Using an Arginine Supplement for Body Building

Taking an arginine supplement in high dosages has been proven very beneficial with the bodybuilding population. These amino acids can stimulate growth hormone release when they are administered orally so taking a supplement prior to strength training has the ability to promote more desirable gains in both muscle strength and mass. However, if you are going to add an arginine supplement to your daily routine there are a few things that you need to consider.

Timing

Ideally, these supplements will be taken 30 to 60 minutes prior to working out. When you boost nitric oxide levels, blood vessels dilate to provide your muscles with more blood flow, nutrients, anabolic hormones and oxygen. For quicker recovery, it is recommended to also take an arginine supplement after working out, before you go to sleep and then when you wake up first thing in the morning. You do want to make a point to take a short break from arginine periodically to continue to reap the most benefits.

Dosage

It is recommended to consume between three to five grams of arginine per day if you are trying to build mass. This quantity is needed to boost nitric oxide levels enough that you will see an increase in growth hormone.

Combining with Other Supplements

You should aim to take an arginine supplement that offers one to three grams of citrulline in every dose. Citrulline is crucial to elevate blood levels of arginine. This then amounts to more growth hormones. Additionally, consuming between 500 and 1,000mg of vitamin C with each dose will slow the absorption of nitric oxide by the free radicals in your body, allowing it to work longer. Lastly, 100mg of American ginseng can be extremely beneficial for improving the conversion process.

Understanding Arginine

Before you start taking an arginine supplement or any other type of supplement, you should understand exactly what it is. Arginine is an important amino acid that plays many roles in your body. It assists with eliminating ammonia, which is a waste product and then it makes compounds such as creatine, L-proline and L-glutamate which can be turned into glucose when there is a shortage in your body and it is needed.

The primary reason an arginine supplement is taken is to make a compound called nitric oxide that relaxes blood vessels which aids with many health issues like heart disease, erectile dysfunction, etc. When arginine is taken in higher doses it stimulates prolactin and growth hormones, making it the perfect natural addition to any bodybuilding routine.
